So if you haven’t heard the news already, Frankie’s Toasties has opened on Portland Street, with 32 different fillings to choose from!
However, the question is – How good can toasties really be?!
I guess it comes down to personal preference but for me, it’s about getting the filling proportions right and ensuring they aren’t burnt!
If you consider yourself a true Mancunian, you better test your knowledge on the Frankie’s ‘Manc Slang’ wall. If you’re like me, you’ll probably realise how much slang you use day-to-day without even realising!
I got down early to avoid the queues as I had seen pictures from the opening day and people were queueing out of the door! I was lucky enough to walk straight up to the till but it wasn’t long until Frankie’s became extremely busy.
You can expect a wait of 10 minutes or so and if you order two separate toasties, they will arrive at different times – Although I’m talking a few minutes or so.
As mentioned earlier, there are 32 different toasties on the menu. I won’t list them all but here are a few that are on my list to try!
- Bloody Cheesy Mary (2 Cheddar & Mozzarella mix, Tomato Passata, Tabasco, Worcestershire Sauce, Horseradish, Black Pepper)
- Steak ‘n’ cheese (2 Cheddar & Mozzarella mix, Roast Beef, English Mustard)
- Pig Dog (2 Cheddar & Mozzarella mix, BBQ Pulled Pork)
- Kim Jong’s Red Hot Ramen (2 Cheddar & Mozzarella mix, Spicy Korean Ramen Noodles)
- Calzone Pepperoni Toastie (2 Cheddar & Mozzarella, Pepperoni, Pizza Sauce)
If you have a sweet tooth like me, you are in for a treat!
- What S’more do you need (Nutella, Melted Marshmallows, Digestive biscuits)
- Jelly Nut (Crunchy Peanut Butter, Strawberry Jam)
- Apple & Custard (Apple Pie Filling, Custard, Sugar & Cinnamon Dusting)
- Chocolate bar toastie (Choose from Caramac, Mars, Galaxy, Boost and More!)
Despite the variety of toasties, there was one that really stood out for me. It was the ‘Frankie Dog’ (2 Cheddar & Mozzarella mix, Frankfurters, American Mustard, Heinz Tommy-K).
I would certainly recommend this to anyone, especially if you are a lover of hot dogs. My only negative would be one side of the toastie wasn’t fully sealed which made it a little messy to eat.
My second toastie was the Caramac toastie. A sweet option is always a necessity and this option did not disappoint. It will definitely take a lot to beat it but I feel like the apple & custard toastie could have a fair chance. We’ll soon find out.
The only negative – It was slightly overdone. However its early days yet and I’m sure these minor problems will soon be ironed out.
In addition to toasties, you can now drink your own face by having it added on your coffee. Simply get your photo taken at the till and it’ll soon be printed as shown below!
MY RECOMMENDATION FOR FRANKIE’S TOASTIES
It goes without saying but people love to take pictures of their food and share it on social media. It’s a fantastic way of reaching new audiences that don’t follow you and it’s a great way of spreading brand awareness. In an ideal situation it may even influence someone to pay a visit.
My concern is the packaging and limited seating. There were 5-6 tables inside Frankie’s, each with two seats. During a busy period, the majority of people are going to be taking their toastie away to eat. But with your toastie served in a paper bag, it doesn’t give many people the opportunity to grab a picture before they tuck in. Ultimately this limits the social media reach that could be achieved.
My solution and preferred choice would be for the toasties to be served in a biodegradable, leak proof food carton.
Not only good for the environment but also a lot easier to carry round and get a photo with! To add that extra personal ‘Frankie Toastie’ touch, a small sticker could be added on the inside, making each toastie instantly recognisable in every shot.
Just a thought!
